Cruelty and the Beast is the third studio album by Cradle of Filth released in may 1998.

It's based on the legend of the Hungarian "Blood Countess" Báthory Erzsébet (Elisabeth Báthory) who was accused,during XVIth century, of numbers of murders, and supposed to drink the blood of her victims.

That's why the cover of the album depicts a woman taking a bath of blood.
